Marble Falls girls basketball loses to Cedar Hill in Mansfield tourney opener

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to Cedar Hill 41-22 to begin the Mansfield Spring Creek Barbeque Invitational Tournament Dec. 28.

The Lady Mustangs (11-9) will play McKinney at 3 p.m. Dec. 28.

Cedar Hill led 13-4 after the first period and 23-11 at the half.

“They had us frustrated in the first half,” head coach John Berkman said. “We turned the ball over before we had a chance to start the offense.”

At halftime, the Lady Mustangs recommitted themselves to taking better care of the ball and executing the offense. As a result, the Lady Longhorns could only outscore them 18-12 in the final 16 minutes.

The constant remains the Marble Falls defense.

“We held them to 18 points in the second half,” Berkman said. “They scored most of their points in the first half off their press and transition. We did a great job of blocking out. We played half-court defense really well. We were able to frustrate them in the second half.”

He noted Cedar Hill features senior guards Jadyn Atchison, who signed to play for the University of Colorado, and Kellis Grant, who signed to play for Sam Houston State University. Berkman added the Lady Longhorns have “several others who are going to smaller schools.”

He pointed out that his team has faced quick and athletic opponents throughout the season.

“This is about us being able to adjust,” he said. “Some of it was us not doing our jobs with ball fakes. We did that in the second half. This will help us learn and get better.”
